How Many Beers To Gain 1 Pound? 36

Although most weight loss programs will tell you to steer clear of alcohol, the reality is you are faced with holidays, happy hours, birthdays, weddings, parties, bbqs, etc. Unless you want to be a stick in the mud, there is no way to avoid alcohol. When we say you can Eat + Drink ≈ Anything and still lose weight, we mean anything, including drinking alcohol.

So does alcohol really make you fat? Yes & No. Alcohol is just like any other drink. OK, maybe not like any other drink, but in terms of calories, yes, it is like any other drink. Just like soda, one beer will not make you gain a pound. One light beer has 96 calories (regular beer only 150 calories). One glass of wine has 85 calories. One tequila shot has 96 calories. All of these drinks have about the same calories. Therefore, three light beers or three glasses of wine or three shots of tequila will be under 300 calories. One 30-minute session of exercise will easily erase those 300 calories.

So if you decide to celebrate, go ahead and enjoy a drink or two or more, you will not gain even 1 pound. Everything in moderation, including alcohol, is on the Eat + Drink ≈ Anything plan. In fact, to gain one pound from drinking alcohol you would have to really drink up.

Alcoholic Beverage Calories Number of Drinks to Gain 1 Pound
Wine 85 41
Rum & Coke 180 19
Miller Lite 96 36
Tequila Shot 97 36
Bloody Mary 123 28

It is unlikely that in one afternoon or night, you will be able to drink anywhere near the number of drinks it will take to gain one pound. If you can accomplish swigging down that many alcohol drinks in one day, then you have more pressing problems to worry about than weight loss.
