Restaurant Portions Quiz
The biggest cause of weight gain is not because of high fructose corn syrup or because of eating carbs or even because of drinking alcohol. The real reason people gain weight is because they eat too much. However, people didn’t just suddenly decide to overeat. Since many Americans eat out, much of the blame can go to restaurants and the portions they serve.
Perhaps to justify their rising prices, restaurants have steadily increased the portion of food they serve on each plate. Fast food burgers are now twice as big as they were 20 years ago and of course they now contain twice the number of calories. Movie popcorn has gone from 270 calories to 630 calories and the list goes on.
The graphic above shows how much the typical Chinese take-out has increased. FYI, we used a chicken and vegetable stir-fry as an example and not something like honey or sesame chicken. Otherwise, the calorie count would be much higher.
So when eating out realize that you should not eat everything on your plate. If you are dining with 1 or 2 people then order an appetizer and split a meal. This will not only save you unneeded calories, you will get to eat what you want and you will save money. How great is that?
