Why You Can’t Lose 10 or 20 Pounds

Do you watch what you eat? Go to the gym? But still after years you are unable to lose those 10 or 20 pounds? Have you even started to gain weight even though you are eating less? Take a look at a typical week below and see if it sounds familiar.

Day How Did You Do? Gained or Lost? Why?
Mon It’s Monday night and it’s been a long day and you’re tired. You didn’t eat very much throughout the day so you’re hungry. You get some takeout and devour it. Maintained Your Weight. Although, you didn’t eat much during the day, you had a huge dinner, plus you were starving for most of the day.
Tue You watch what you eat and go to the gym. Lost Weight. You burned 700 calories more than you ate so you lost 1/5 of a pound.
Wed You eat as usual, but are unable to get to the gym. You go to bed hungry. Lost Weight. You only burned 350 calories more than you ate so you lost only 1/10 of a pound.
Thu You’re hungry and you’ve been depriving yourself for the last 2 days so you have a big breakfast. Since you’re going to the gym later tonight you decide to go with co-workers to lunch. Work drags–you don’t make it to the gym. Gained Weight. You ate 400 calories more than you burned so you gained a little more than 1/10 of a pound.
Fri You cut back on food during the day. You make a quick stop at the gym. Then go out to a function at night. Maintained Your Weight. Although you didn’t eat much during the day and went to the gym, at the party you decided to “let go”.
Sat Not feeling so great from last night, you drag all day eating whatever you can find. Gained Weight. You ate 300 calories more than you burned so you gained a little less than 1/10 of a pound.
Sun Feeling better you eat “healthy” all day long, take a walk, run errands. Maintained Your Weight. You ate and burned about the same number of calories so you didn’t lose or gain weight for the day.
